How Would My Bag Age After Some TLC? [Oil Tanned vs Chrome Tanned Products]

We pride ourselves on using high quality genuine leather for all of our bags and leather goods.

First let’s address what’s tanning in the leather making world! In short it is, the process that converts animal skin to leather. How this process is done and the different types of it had a significant impact on the quality of the product you hope to use for years to come. Will it soften and acquire a patina over time?

Most of our products are made from either oil and chrome tanned leather and each have their own characteristics, so here is what you can expect from your bag over time.

Oil-tanned leather is water, stain and perspiration resistant, and has a more natural look and feel because less finishing materials have been applied, allowing its natural beauty to shine through.

This also means your bag may have some small scars and imperfections. Not only do these marks lend a tremendous amount of character to your bag, but they are also signs that you’re getting the best leather available. The oil content makes the leather soft and pliable, which are important qualities not only for the look and feel of the leather, but for its workability

80-90% of vera pelle leathers in the world are tanned by chrome (also known as mineral) tanning. As chrome-tanned leather holds colour well over the lifetime of the piece however the longevity of texture is slightly shorten then other types of tanned leather.

Our chrome tanned bags have a manually added water and scratch resistant layer to protect the leather and give you a long lasting product.
